For the second time this year, those fiends at Sub Pop conspire to make me feel old. That’s right, folks - Mudhoney’s seminal proto-grunge EP Superfuzz Bigmuff was released twenty years ago.
And what better way to celebrate than by re-releasing it? The new Deluxe Edition of Superfuzz Bigmuff, to be released on 2nd June, will include the original EP in full, remastered, with a bunch of other singles and demos and a load of live tracks. There are no less than four versions of “Mudride”, apparently.
But hey - it’s easy to squeeze out a re-release twenty years down the line, right? What sets Mudhoney aside from many of their contemporaries is the fact that they’re still going strong today. Which means that they’ll be releasing an entirely new album, The Lucky Ones, on the same day as the Superfuzz Bigmuff re-issue. Grunge-tastic!
There’s even set to be a Mudhoney live show (their only UK date this year) at The Forum in London on 31st July - which I’d hazard a guess is either already sold out or very close to being so. Damn you, Londoners, with your wide range of prestigious gig choices!
Still, a new Mudhoney album is compensation enough, I suppose. That, and the thought that maybe we’re about to see a full scale nineties revival that will sweep all the rotten eighties retro music and fashion out of the way … w00t!
This calls for a celebration - here’s Mudhoney and Pearl Jam doing “Kick Out The Jams” in Sao Paolo, Brazil:
They seem to not have their own website, but you can find out plenty about Mudhoney at the Sub Pop site, and there’s free tuneage on the MySpazz.
