Austrian Death Machine … it’s an evocative name for a band, don’t you think? I can’t tell you much about them apart from what I’ve found on their biography page at Metal Blade Records, and that they’ve just released “If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It” - the first single from forthcoming debut album Total Brutal - on their MySpace page.
Now, I usually avoid cut’n'pasting press release blurbs for The Dreaded Press on principle, but I don’t think there’s any other way to do Austrian Death Machine justice. So here’s band member Tim Lambesis (yeah, the guy from As I Lay Dying) describing “If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It”:
“In the first verse Ahhnold is talking trash about how he’s going to take Predator down, but in the second verse Predator comes back spittin’ his evil game. This is the classic struggle of good and evil but with way bigger muscles and more brutal double bass. In fact, I think it’s the breakdown about 1/2 way through the song that crushes Predator’s evil once and for all.”
Quite. The Ahhnold he’s referring to is, one assumes, the familiar-looking musclebound cartoon cyborg in the promo picture there; it should be quite clear that Austrian Death Machine are deliberately and unashamedly amping up all the violent braggadocio of metal with a side-serving of Schwarzenegger spoof. And why not?
Here’s Ahhnold’s quote about the decision to release “If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It” first:
“Most bands put all of their good songs first. Instead I decided to release track 15 first to prove that this album is Total Brutal from start to finish. If you like this song, then get ready for 17 tracks of punishing brutality when the CD finally hits…. or when I hit you in the face for not buying it. Whichever happens first, at least we know things only get better from here.”
Looking at the track titles for Total Brutal, I think he’s probably right: “Get To The Choppa”; “Come With Me if You Want to Live”; “You Have Just Been Erased”. If Austrian Death Machine can match the musical power of “If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It” and maintain the gag, this could be a real winner.
There’s no proper website for ‘em yet, but you can always poke around the Austrian Death Machine MySpace page. Listen carefully for the, er, lamentations of der wummin.
