Levellers abandon folk-punk, start writing love songs

July 11th, 2008 by The Editor

The LevellersWhat’s this, then? Have crusty anarcho-folkers The Levellers gone soft on us? Well, not really - I think they’ve always had a romantic streak beneath that firebrand exterior - but their next new single “Before The End” is apparently going to be something a little more personal and intimate than anything they’ve done before.

It’s all relative, of course. We can expect “Before The End” to have a strong hint of The Levellers‘ traditional punky flavour, but apparently there’s “Velvet Underground-style violin and shadowy female backing vocals” involved as well; we’ll be able to hear it for ourselves when it’s released as a download and limited 7-inch vinyl on 28th July.

This being the festival season, The Levellers are in their element, touring the country and playing outdoor shows as well as their own Devon-based Beautiful Days bash - so let’s hope the following dates have slightly more reliable weather than we’ve had of late:

  • 12th July - Arley Hall, Cheshire
  • 17th July - Larmer Tree Festival, Wiltshire
  • 19th July - Doncaster Live, South Yorkshire
  • 1st August - Cambridge Folk Fest, Cambridgshire
  • 3rd August - Stokes Bay Festival, Hampshire
  • 8th August - Cropredy Festival, Oxfordshire
  • 10th August - Marktrock, Belgium
  • 15-17th August - Beautiful Days, Devon
  • 22nd August - Arundel Castle, West Sussex
  • 31st August - Connect Festival, Scotland
  • 6th September - Stormin’ The Castle, Co. Durham
  • 12th September - Bowood House, Wiltshire
  • 17th September - Musicport, East Yorkshire
  • 25th September - Royal & Derngate Theatre, Northampton
  • 26th September - Buxton Opera House, Buxton
  • 27th September - Royal Albert Hall, London

The Levellers in the Royal Albert Hall… now there’s a turn-up for the books! Hook yourself up with some free-to-listen tuneage at The Levellers’ MySpace page, and have a poke around their website for more news.
