My Ruin release animated video for “Memento Mori”

My RuinMy Ruin recently completed their UK tour in support of new album Throat Full Of Heart [review]. Their YouTube channel now features the striking and dark animated video for “Memento Mori”.

Throat Full Of Heart was very nearly never made - the day before recording was due to begin, singer Tairrie B was involved in a serious car accident that nearly severed her left arm.

Luckily, Tairrie recovered and went on to record Throat Full Of Heart as planned, channeling much of the fear and discomfort of her injuries into the lyrics and performance - you can find out more about the recording in our interview with Tairrie.

“Memento Mori” was one song that took on greater relevance after the accident, and that’s reflected in the video, which was created by Berlin-based artist Bruce Stirling John Knox. Take a look:

In the words of Tairrie B herself:

“Bruce is an incredible artist and had done a couple paintings of me which were really dark and beautiful. We had no idea he was also into making videos until we saw what he did for the Tom Waits song “Make it Rain”.

I discussed the idea of having him create something for our new album and picked the song I felt he would most vibe with and he just came up with this Dante’s Inferno-esque concept, keeping it within the theme of the album but based around my accident on a whole different level. I think his interpretation of my fighting the devil and death in the depths of hell is kinda cool and really powerful in its message.

It’s a fun video to watch and something very different to add to our collection. We actually debuted it in London at our album launch party as we celebrated my birthday to a great response, but we wanted to wait until Valentines Day to officially show it off online since it has to do with the whole idea of having the heart to survive no matter what the circumstance.”

Don’t forget: you can read the Dreaded Press interview with Tairrie B and Mick Murphy of My Ruin, or check the review of My Ruin’s live show in Southampton.
