The split single or EP is not a new concept, but I’ve not seen it done three ways many times before. But that’s what we’re getting from the twobythree EP from Hideous Records, released on 24th March - six tracks in total, two each from Reuben, The Ghost Of A Thousand and Baddies, all three of whom are touring on the same bill at the same time.
Reuben need little introduction to aficionados of independent UK rock music. Their contribution to the twobythree EP is a cut-down version of “Cities On Fire” (which is a great track lifted from recent album In Nothing We Trust, but hence probably already on the iPods of much of the target market) and an extended version of early rarity “Shambles” (a hidden track from Reuben’s first extremely limited EP, and hence a little more appealing and obvious a choice).
The Ghost Of A Thousand are a band on the rise, if the music forums and message boards of the UK scenes are anything to go by. Like Reuben they provide one already-released track for the twobythree EP with “Black Art Number One”, which is a sturdy punk’n'roll belter that suggests the live shows should be as good as the gossip would have us believe, and one rarity in the form of a demo cut of “Up To You”. Both are taken from recent debut album This Is Where The Fight Begins.
Baddies are a sneaky new surprise - so fresh the PR people don’t even have any clever quotes for them yet - but if the madcap post-hardcore weirdness of “Battleships” is anything to go by, they’ll have plenty in short order. In fact, here’s one they can have for free: Baddies sound like Future Of The Left on a mushroom binge in Disneyworld. Both of the Baddies songs on the twobythree EP, “Battleships” and “Tiffany I’m Sorry”, will presumably appear on their as-yet untitled debut album some time next year.
All of which means the twobythree tour should be a blast as well, and you can catch it on the following dates:
- 1st April - Birmingham, Academy
- 2nd April - Sheffield, Corporation
- 3rd April - Glasgow, Garage
- 5th April - Nottingham, Rescue Rooms
- 6th April - Manchester, Academy
- 7th April - Norwich, Waterfront
- 9th April - Plymouth, Hub
- 10th April - Cardiff, Club Ifor Bach
- 11th April - London, Electric Ballroom
For more information you can check the official Reuben website or the site for The Ghost Of A Thousand, but Baddies are so damned new and underground that they only have a MySpace so far.
Well, what are you waiting for, eh?
