Asobi Seksu are much-celebrated craftpersons of shimmering dreamy guitar-pop, and their new single “Goodbye” demonstrates their mastery of the style.
Having outgrown their early tendency to lean more toward the noisy shoegazer end of the spectrum, but keeping a rich textural approach to melody that brings to mind the production of Brian Wilson and Phil Spektor, Asobi Seksu are carving out their own little niche.
“Goodbye” is a bouncy little pop song, with Yuki’s delicate dual-language vocals floating on top of warm washes of guitar and a sparse simple rhythm section. It’s an incredibly sweet sound – not Hello Kitty cute, but uplifting like an unexpected bouquet of flowers in a dreary office cubicle.
On the flipside of the single, “Thursday” takes the same sound in a slightly more wiggy direction, going out with more of a crescendo of noise than “Goodbye” but still driven by shimmering melodies.
The music of Asobi Seksu is like hearing some mythologised early sixties pop record from underwater or behind a haze of anti-depressants – everything seems painted in delicate pastel colours with no sharp edges. “Goodbye” is an ideal song to warm your heart on a cold spring morning.
