Single review: Gallows - “Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn’t Mean You’re Safe”

February 15th, 2008 by The Editor

GallowsIt seems like you can hardly turn a corner in the world of rock music without running into someone talking about Gallows. “Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn’t Mean You’re Safe” is taken from their sleeper-hit album Orchestra Of Wolves, and gives a pretty good idea of why the Watford punk crew have gotten people so excited.

Quite simply, “Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn’t Mean You’re Safe” sounds completely different to the limp stuff being passed off as punk all over MySpace. Gallows are drawing on long-standing traditions in hardcore and (to some extent) metal, and their sound is hardly ground-breaking in a global sense. But they’re probably the first band making this sort of noise to be heard as widely as they have been.

“Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn’t Mean You’re Safe” may have a long cumbersome title, but the song itself is a short sharp corrosive slice of discordant blatter, with simple hardcore chords and rock-solid drumming underneath schizoid punk vocals howled with convincing fury.

The hooks are as old as the musicians playing them (if not older), but Gallows wrap them into an intense little package that doesn’t outstay its welcome. “Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn’t Mean You’re Safe” is a punchy and authentic punk rock single – and a welcome antidote to the radio-friendly pop tosh of “Staring At The Rude Boys”.
