Single review: Not Advised - "You’re The Designers, We’re The Deciders"

February 7th, 2008 by The Editor

Not AdvisedNot Advised may not seem all that unique at first glance – a youthful gang of UK pop-punkers with big smiles and bags of energy who grew up on Sum 41 and Blink-182. The country’s full of ‘em – hell, the world seems full of ‘em at the moment. But a closer listen to their forthcoming single “You’re The Designers, We’re The Deciders” will reveal the difference.

Listen closely, now. It’s not the “Boys Of Summer” guitar lines or the brash and crunchy open chords. It’s not the pacey drum patterns and stop-start dynamics, or the breakdown middle eight. It’s not the ridiculously simple but devastatingly sharp hook of the shout-along “oh – oh-oh!” call-response of the lyrics. It’s none of these things – which, while very good, are far from unique in and of themselves.

The difference in “You’re The Designers, We’re The Deciders” is in the spaces in between all those things, and in the sum total of them. The difference is sincerity – there’s no fake yearning poetry, there’s no airbrushed and Photoshopped overlay, there’s no branded corporate gleam. There’s just Not Advised - five young guys having the time of their lives and wanting to tell you all about it.

Give ‘em a listen, why don’tcha?
