The Rotted get airplay in … Topshop?

The Rotted - Get Dead Or Die TryingWell, how things change, eh? The few traumatic memories I have of visiting Topshop as a teenager during one of my mother’s failed attempts to get me to dress tidily are soundtracked by the sort of Rick Astley/UB40 eighties pop dross that was ubiquitous at the time. You wouldn’t have heard an extreme metal band like The Rotted while you poked a desultory finger along the racks of slacks, that’s for sure.

But apparently you can now. Exactly what it says about Topshop’s desperate need to branch out to a wider client base (or perhaps simply their need to scare the existing one away) I have no idea, but they’ve picked “A Brief Moment Of Regret” by The Rotted to sit on their current soundtrack CD alongside such artists as Elvis Costello and Kate Bush. Mixed messages, anyone?

Still, it’s quite the coup for The Rotted, currently in the process of reinventing themselves - phoenix-like - from their previous incarnation as horror-extremists Gorerotted, and with new album Get Dead Or Die Trying about to drop on the market like a freshly severed limb (to be reviewed right here at The Dreaded Press this week, and which is being streamed in its entirety on the Terroriser website right now). Kudos to whoever was at the PR wheel for that one.

Question is, will this start a trend? Will we find ourselves selecting our veg at Tescos to the dulcet tones of Marilyn Manson, or slam-dancing our way down the aisles of Marks & Spencer in time to the rhythms of Converge? Unlikely, I guess … but it would certainly make hitting the high street a slightly more appealing pastime. In the meantime, there’s no website for The Rotted but they do have the obligatory MySpazz.
